Blundstone Lace Replacement Guide
Blundstone is best known for its slip-on Chelsea boots — but the brand also makes a popular lace-up range, from the casual Originals to tough work and safety boots. Laces are the first thing to wear out: tips fray, a lace snaps mid-shift, or mud and wax finally win. The good news is you don't need brand-specific laces to fix it. You just need the right length, the right type, and a colour you like.
Most Blundstone lace-ups take a round lace around 120 cm (for 6 pairs of eyelets) or 140 cm (for 7 pairs). Not sure? Count your eyelet pairs or measure your old lace with the chart below. Working outdoors or on wet sites? Choose waxed laces — they shed water and hold a knot better.
First: does your Blundstone actually have laces?
It's worth a quick check, because Blundstone makes both kinds. The classic slip-on Chelsea boots (the 500 and 550 families, and most of the Originals) have elastic side panels and no laces at all. The lace-up range is a separate line — the Originals Lace Up, plus the work and safety lace-up boots tradies wear on site. If yours has eyelets and a lace, this guide is for you. If it's a slip-on, you're after new elastic or a full boot, not laces.
What length laces do Blundstone lace-ups take?
Lace length comes down to how many pairs of eyelets your boot has — not the brand. Count the pairs (one eyelet each side is one pair), then match it to this chart:
| Pairs of eyelets | Lace length | Typical boot |
|---|---|---|
| 4–5 pairs | 90–120 cm (36–47") | Low-cut lace-ups |
| 5–6 pairs | 120 cm (47") | Originals Lace Up, classic work boots |
| 6–7 pairs | 140 cm (55") | Most work & service boots |
| 7–8 pairs | 150 cm (59") | Taller safety lace-ups |
| 8+ pairs | 180 cm (71") | Tall boots with speed hooks |
The Blundstone Originals Lace Up has 6 eyelet pairs, so 120 cm is the usual fit. The taller work and safety lace-ups often run 7 pairs, where 140 cm is the safer pick. When in doubt, size up — spare length tucks neatly into your knot, but a lace that's too short can't be stretched.
Which type: round or waxed?
Round, not flat
Blundstone lace-ups are built for round laces — they feed smoothly through eyelets and speed hooks and hold up under the tension a work boot puts on them, where a wide flat lace tends to bunch or wear thin. A 4–5 mm round lace suits most Blundstone eyelets.
Should you go waxed?
If your Blundstones see mud, rain or a wet worksite, waxed laces are worth it. The wax coating sheds water and dirt and grips itself, so your knots (and any heel lock) hold far better through the day. For everyday and indoor wear, a standard round lace is perfectly fine and a little softer to tie.
Not sure of your size? Measure the old lace
The most reliable check takes ten seconds:
- Pull one old lace fully out of the boot.
- Lay it flat and straight along a tape measure — don't stretch it.
- Measure tip to tip in centimetres. That's your length; round to the nearest size above.
If the old lace is missing or has snapped and you can't line it up, fall back to counting eyelet pairs with the chart above.
How to lace them back up
- Even up the lace so both ends are the same length before you start.
- Thread straight across the bottom two eyelets, then criss-cross your way up.
- Keep the tension even as you go so the boot sits snug, not pinched.
- Finish with a double knot. If your heel tends to lift, add a heel lock at the top two eyelets to pull it back into place.
